OMG! Nick came running to Rick’s bedroom door about 4:00am Friday morning yelling a coyote got a hold of one of the baby goats. Rick went to the field and brought back Zarina and laid her in the workshop. She had bite holes around her neck and a huge chunk of meat missing from her back leg, along with multiple bite marks down her back and on her beautiful ears. Rick took a wet rag to her to clear away the blood and check her status. She seemed to be basically okay. We let her sleep in the workshop the remaining of the time and checked her in the morning. She was in such shock and so soar she couldn’t even walk. Rick carried her out to the field with the other goats to spend the day. When we got home later in the day she hadn’t moved and she was lying in an ant bed. Rick took her into the shower to get her all cleaned up; put ointment on her wounds and bandaged her up. Then we treated all the others with ointment too. All the goats had bit marks down their bodies and on their beautiful floppy ears. It’s a debate but we think it was a dog. A coyote would have done it for the kill, the food and only take on one. A dog is in it for the chase, the game and takes on who ever runs. Well Zarina was in shock but by the time we left town Saturday she was looking better. She is much better today. Now Rick’s dogs get locked in the run with the goats every night to guard them. They are better, but when Rick let them out to the field this morning they looked skittish and keep an eye on the direction the animal came from.
